Artist: Wennie Huang
Medium: Pierced paper drawing, 20.5”x20.5”, 2014. Please note, this piece is sold framed.
Wennie creates drawings of trees from the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Greenwood Cemetery and Prospect Park – all mainly within walking distance of her home. She focuses on isolated parts of the trees she finds most interesting and unique. Instead of using pencil, though, she captures the character of each tree by piercing the paper repeatedly – kind of like a tattoo or carving initials into a tree trunk. The trees emerge from the accumulations of piercings, which also make the paper more sculptural, or as she puts it “…something that floats between two and three dimensions, not quite one nor the other."
