Karin Waskiewicz approaches painting like an archeologist. She builds up repeated layers of acrylic paint and then carefully carves, digs and gouges through them to reveal the image buried within. She uses the discarded chips of paint in subsequent paintings so that each is physically and conceptually linked. For Karin, the paintings act like our memory - they are revealed by excavating fragments of experience. What's created is new but also retains a resonance of the original experience.
Karina is based in NYC having recently graduated from the University of Iowa's School of Painting MFA program, one of the top ten paintings departments of public universities.
