Artist: Cecile Chong
Medium: Encaustic and mixed media on panel, 48" x 48" – diptych, 2010. Please note: This piece is ready to be hung but is sold unframed.
About the work: Cecile was born in Ecuador to Chinese parents, went to middle school in Macau, and moved to the U.S. at age 19. Her work is marked by these cultures. She describes her interest “in how cultures copy others, and how borrowed ideas often find their way back to the original culture. This entanglement of culture, history, place and interpretation are themes I explore in my work.”
Her pieces often incorporate found objects like ping pong paddles or skateboards. Cecile works in encaustic, incising and embedding a wide array of materials (oil, pigment from Morocco and India, volcano ash from Ecuador, metallic leaf, rice paper, beads, circuit board material, appropriated and original images) into the wax, to create dimensional paintings and sculptures. Her dreamy images reveal complex narratives - stories that refer to the ones we tell ourselves about our own cultures and experiences.
