About the work: Brooklyn-based artist Michelle Hinebrook creates abstract paintings that combine seemingly opposite schools of painting, namely expressionism with hard-edged abstraction. Using the language of refracted light in the form of intricately cut gemstones, her large-scale paintings enfold the viewer in an active color field. Up close they seem to buzz with activity and the expressive quality of the paint. Stepping back, however, the paintings coalesce into gleaming, still planes of light. As Michelle writes, "I’d like the viewer to have an experience of the infinite, to peer into the mysterious networks of shapes, becoming intertwined within the geometry and then have a personal moment when the borders of the painting fall away a little, leaving them in a visionary, reflective state of mind."
